The first wooden structure was replaced by a stone building in the late 1600s after it was destroyed in the 1780 hurricane. Most of the present church was built during the 1800s and it has seen much restoration work over the years. The church contains many historic artefacts, including the baptismal font from 1684 and the original church bell, which pre-dates the United States Liberty Bell by more than 50 years. On departing St. James Parish Church you will continue inland through swaying cane fields and picturesque villages to Orchid World.

Orchid World sits on 6 acres of land, some 800 feet above sea level in the central parish of St. George. A meandering path winds its way between beautiful outcrops of coral, rock gardens, cool shady gullies and ponds. Hummingbirds and the soothing sound of running water add to the natural beauty of the natural terrain. The Orchids themselves are quite spectacular; thousands are grown in shaded houses and outside on freestanding palisades. Many visitors are fascinated by the sight of orchid plants growing in mid-air with their roots completely free of any soil! There are wonderful photo opportunities abound for the professional and amateur photographer.

Harrisons Cave is a magnificent natural phenomenon, in a class of its own. Formed from a particularly beautiful type of crystallized limestone, this stunning cavern is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the entire Caribbean. Though created over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, Harrisons Cave has only been open to the public since 1981.   The first recorded history of Harrisons Cave dates back to 1796, but it then lay undisturbed until it was rediscovered in 1970 by Ole Sorenson and developed by the Government of Barbados

After checking in at the Visitors Centre, you board the electric tram that will take you down into the cave and you are on your way to a memorable experience - magnificent chambers, incredible stalactites and stalagmites, bubbling streams, tumbling cascades, plunging waterfalls and emerald pools. Throughout the mile long cave the flowstone covered walls glisten in the lights as the calcite laden waters drip down from the roof.

In many areas the stalactites have reached down to join with a stalagmite and form spectacular pillars. At various points the tram stops to allow passengers to disembark and have a closer look at the beauty at hand. One stop takes place at the lowest point in the cave, where a waterfall plunges into an emerald pool.

On this memorable journey, the railway hugs the North-eastern coastline where rippling fields of sugarcane stretch from the shoreline up to the mountains. The high volcanic peaks rise nearly 4,000 feet above sea level, coated with lush green rainforests. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep "ghuts", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Your railway tour Narrator will point out abandoned sugar estates with overgrown chimneys and windmills, and provide insight into the island's unique history.  Your experience is complimented by a scenic drive on board the Scenic Railway's sightseeing buses along the South-western coast. Enjoy excellent vistas of Brimstone Hill Fortress, the British "Gibraltar of the West Indies;" Middle Island where Thomas Jefferson's great-grandfather is buried, and the neighbouring island of Nevis, birthplace of American statesman Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.

Leaving the port you will cruise along the western coastline of the island to one of the snorkel sites within the Marine Park where there is a labyrinth of shallow reefs and coral heads that act as the habitat for schools of French Grunts, Goat Fish, Jacks and Snappers.   Other fish that can be seen there in abundance are Parrot, Trumpet, Peacock Flounders and Rock Fish.

A variety of eels - black, moray, golden spotted and sharp nose can also be seen. Octopus and lobsters can be seen at times lodged in the rocks along with sea urchins, starfish, sand divers and flying gurnard. Some lucky snorkelers at times have seen turtles and Southern Sting Rays in the sandy areas. If your legs begin to tire there is easy access to the beach for those who wish to rest. A light snack is served on board after this exciting time spent in the water.

N.B. A trained snorkeling guide always accompanies the group. Time spent in the water is approximately 1 hour and the snorkel boat is moored in close proximity to the snorkelers for easy access if they so desire.

Your tour will start by heading north along Barbados' "platinum coast" where some of Barbados' best restaurants and hotels can be seen along with the homes of the rich & famous. You first stop will be St. James Parish Church located just north of Holetown, where the first settlers landed in 1627.

Harrisons Cave

  • Half Day excursion, £37.00/adult, £25.00/child
  • Activity level: Not suitable for passengers with walking difficulties / wheelchairs
  • Family-friendly
