Alicante is a city of contrasts, from the new Sports Harbour with yacht marinas and shopping malls to the palm-lined promenade taking you to the atmospheric old quarter, known as El Barrio, and of course the city's landmark, the Castillo de Santa Barbara.

Built and destroyed many times over, the castle itself is a fascinating grab bag of architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance.
